OAKLAND TOWNSHIP — Donations for benches, picnic tables and a native plant garden are sought for Gallagher Creek Park.

More than 40 volunteers participated in the installation of the park’s new playground July 14 on the north side of Silverbell Road, east of Adams Road.

“It was fun to help match up playground parts with equipment and meet great folks,” Oakland Township resident and volunteer Barbara Barber said in a statement.

The nature-inspired playground features a custom treehouse structure that includes two sets of double slides, a spiral slide, and climbers that look like wooden stumps and logs. In addition, the playground has two-person swings, a crawling and balancing log and timbers, and a dragonfly seesaw.

The playground is surrounded by a prairie and trails that lead to an observation deck overlooking the headwaters of Gallagher Creek.

Playground assembly volunteers enjoyed a lunch provided by Kroger.

“Kroger was happy to feed the hungry volunteers who came out to help build the neighborhood playground,” Jason West, manager of the Oakland Township Kroger store, said in a statement.

Home Depot provided cement for the playground footings, saving the township more than $11,000, according to Oakland Township Parks and Recreation Director Mindy Milos-Dale.

“The Home Depot Foundation was grateful to be part of this project, which allowed them to give back to their community and build stronger relationships,” Alana Hart, from the Lake Orion Home Depot, said in a statement.

The playground construction is the first phase of the park improvement project, which is expected to be completed this fall. According to Milos-Dale, using a volunteer playground installation saves the township more than $11,000.

Gallagher Creek Park improvement costs will be funded through the township’s parks millage. In May, the Oakland Township Board of Trustees approved $150,000 for construction of the park playground, pavilion, restrooms, parking lot and more.
