ST. CLAIR SHORES — Stifling defense played for the majority of the second half helped the St. Clair Shores Lakeview girls basketball team to a 44-35 win over Clinton Township Chippewa Valley Jan. 15 at Lakeview.

Tied 22-22 at halftime, the Huskies (7-2, 4-0 Macomb Area Conference Blue Division) held the Big Reds to 13 second-half points, including six in the third quarter.

Chippewa Valley with the loss falls to 3-6, 1-3 MAC Blue.

Lakeview, playing for its third straight MAC Blue title, started the second half on a 14-0 run to take a 36-22 lead. The Huskies forced a number of turnovers on the run, which led to transition scoring opportunities.

Lakeview led by double digits for most of the second half, but the Big Reds cut the lead to 40-35 with about a minute left in regulation. Lakeview senior guard Julia Decker sealed the win, going 4 of 4 from the foul line in the last 40 seconds.

"We're very comfortable with (Julia) in that situation," Lakeview coach Joe Charrette said. "It's a shock when she misses. She's our best free-throw shooter and she came through."

Chippewa Valley in the first half led by as many as five points before Lakeview closed on an 8-3 run.

"We just had to play with more intensity," Charrette said. "(Chippewa Valley) did whatever they wanted in the first half. We just had to put some pressure on them. The girls played a great second half."

Lakeview senior forward Kelly Wandzel led all scorers with 13 points, including 10 in the second half. Huskies junior center Joslyn Brennan chipped in with 9 points.

Chippewa Valley senior forward Aubrey Vitale and senior guard Brisa Vidal each scored 9 points.

Lakeview's next game is against Warren Fitzgerald at 7 p.m. Jan. 17 on the road.

Chippewa Valley's next tilt is against Fraser High at 7 p.m. Jan. 17.
