Dealership sponsorship brightens downtown Rochester

ROCHESTER HILLS — A Rochester Hills dealership group is doing its part to keep downtown Rochester aglow this holiday season.

John Fox, president of Fox Automotive, said his dealership group is the presenting sponsor for the Big, Bright Light Show in downtown Rochester. The promotion, which lights up the downtown’s storefronts with more than 1 million multicolored Christmas lights, will be visible in the evenings leading up to Jan. 1 with some additional sightings happening during weekends in January.

Fox said this is the third year that his dealership group has offered a “sizable investment” into the promotion so that it can continue to brighten the season for shoppers. The dealership group is also offering an associated auction prize this year that includes a two-year vehicle lease, he said.

“When you look at the financial benefit it is for these small businesses, we can’t afford to let it go,” he said. “The Big, Bright Light Show brings over 1 million people into our community.

“I didn’t do it to increase our business. I did it to protect our downtown, truly what makes our Rochester a special place to live. Anything I can do to support the small businesses downtown, to keep that Norman Rockwell quality, I think that’s my responsibility as part of the community.”

Robert Shastal, general sales manager at Bill Fox Chevrolet, said the lights attract plenty of attention.

“It’s just one of those things that Rochester as a community is really proud of,” he said. “They light up the whole town, and we light up our whole building as well.”

Bill Fox’s Chevrolet, Toyota and Volkswagen dealerships all decorate their buildings with lights, even though they’re located uphill from downtown Rochester, Shastal explained. He said the dealerships offer a great view of the dazzling displays below.

“We probably are the most lit building prior to going downtown,” he explained.
