A local driver was caught by surprise when a piece of concrete struck his windshield while he was driving down the freeway Jan. 16.

According to a news release from Lt. Mike Shaw, public information officer for the Michigan State Police, troopers from the Metro North Post were called to the scene of a traffic incident at around 11 a.m. The incident occurred on Interstate 696, near Evergreen Road.

Troopers discovered that the driver of a 2015 GMC Acadia had been traveling east on I-696 when concrete debris shattered his windshield.

Shaw said the driver told police the debris struck his car while the vehicle was going under an overpass. The driver was unsure if the concrete had fallen from a bridge or was kicked up from the road.

Troopers were unable to determine where the concrete came from or the exact location where the incident occured.

There were no other reports of vehicle damage on I-696 at press time, Shaw said.
