CENTER LINE — The days are growing shorter. The nights are getting longer. As we approach the holidays and also the darkest days of the year, members of the Center Line Beautification Commission will soon be out scouting for the prettiest, best-lit properties to honor in the annual Light Up the Sky holiday decorating contest.

“This is something that each family can do,” said Kathi Buckner, the commission’s chair. “You get in your car and you drive around the city, and you take a look at what your neighbors are doing. It’s really great.”

The contest is open to both residents and business owners. First- and second-place awards will be bestowed in each category.

“I think that the entire city enjoys the opportunity to see the creativity of the other members of the community, and there have been some incredible displays over the years,” Buckner said.

Jan Ornsten, treasurer of the commission, said judging will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 19. Members of the commission will do the judging and will be driving through the neighborhoods looking for properties to recognize.

“All the residents will need to have their lights on for us to see the beauty of their houses and garages, rooftops and trees. They decorate it all,” Ornsten said. “We’re looking for a lot of color, a lot of what they put their heart and soul into, putting up their trees.”

Ornsten said beautifully lit arches have been popular in recent years.

“We like to see it because it adds a lot of happiness to the city,” Ornsten said. “It lights up the streets.”

Buckner added, “The opportunity to give back for all of us is important. This is an easy thing to do.”

The winners will be announced in December and awards will be given out at the Center Line City Council’s meeting on the first Monday in February.

Residents are also invited to nominate their own homes, a neighbor or a worthy business by calling City Hall at (586) 757-6800.
