BERKLEY — The Berkley Steelers youth football team defeated the Chesterfield Chargers 14-12 in the Oakland Macomb Youth Football Association championship game for the 12-13 age group.

The Steelers were down to the Chargers 6-0 at halftime but scored 14 unanswered points in the second half. The team recovered an onside kick in the final minutes to secure the win.

“These kids have been the underdog all season, with so many teams thinking they could beat us,” head coach Keith Sikorski said in a prepared statement. “It came down to a dog fight, and these kids played their hearts out to bring the GOLD back to Berkley.”

The Steelers previously won two other championships with the groups of kids in the 8-9 and 10-11 age groups.

“It’s a long season, starting back in the spring camps, the conditioning, the long practices, the complaints and the ups and downs of any football season. These kids and parents must stay committed and by doing so, have earned this tonight. To bring our little town into the Superbowl, and to bring back the Trophy makes all of Berkley Proud, and I am proud to have known these Champions,” General Manager Andrew Hadfield said in a prepared statement.
