BERKLEY — The local Berkley Steelers Youth Football & Cheerleading club, part of the Oakland/Macomb Youth Football Association, had much success on the gridiron this year, with its flag team winning the Flag Bowl and each of the other three teams achieving a regular-season record of 7-1

All teams recently competed in the local playoffs. The flag football team of 6- and 7-year-olds won the Flag Bowl 24-13 against the Clawson Mavericks Oct. 17.

The freshman team, composed of 8- and 9-year-olds, was led by DZ Ramey and Cameron Madison. The team’s successful season came to an end last weekend in the playoffs against Romeo.

The junior varsity team of 10- and 11-year-olds defeated Birmingham 20-0 in the playoffs last weekend and will have a second round game against Romeo.

The varsity team of 12- and 13-year-olds also won its playoff game 19-0 against Romeo, and it will play against Birmingham later this week — the only team to defeat the Steelers in the regular season. Both the varsity and junior varsity teams will play next on Oct. 30.

“We are wanting that rematch more than anything. We know the mistakes and fumbles that occurred and are working harder than ever to be ready,” varsity coach Keith Sikorski said in a press release.
