GROSSE POINTE WOODS — If you would’ve told Grosse Pointe North senior team captain Julia Liagre during her freshman season that she’d be a team captain and a mentor for her younger teammates as a senior, she’d probably have the same reaction as she plans to have when she gives her senior speech at the end of the year.

STERLING HEIGHTS — Winning 20 games, a district title and a league title will put a team on the map, and Utica Ford II girls basketball is eager to get everyone’s best this season.

FARMINGTON HILLS — Farmington Hills Mercy coach Loretta Vogel and her squad finally had a chance to catch their breath after Mercy (32-15-3) defeated Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern in five sets at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 State Championship Nov. 18 at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.

OAKLAND COUNTY — The Michigan High School Athletic Association swim and dive state finals marked a successful end to the season for a slew of Oakland County teams Nov. 18.

WEST BLOOMFIELD — West Bloomfield resident Steven Lawrence has been a decorated runner throughout his 32-year competitive running career, and he just added another notable achievement to his résumé.

DETROIT — Southfield A&T head coach Aaron Marshall described his squad after their regional championship win over West Bloomfield Nov. 18 as a “team of firsts,” in reference to the school’s first-ever regional title and state finals berth.

DETROIT — Warren De La Salle has made making the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 state finals game look like an ordinary task the past seven seasons, reaching the finals six times, including four straight times with their appearance this year.

TROY — For the fourth-straight year, Warren De La Salle’s season will end at Ford Field.
