FRASER — On April 20, members of the LT Wood-CPL Reid Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6691 dedicated a tree to veterans who have died by suicide.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — At one time they were the knights of the skies, and soon they will be teachers from the ground.The Selfridge Military Air Museum, at Selfridge Air National Guard base, is restoring two historic planes: a Vought F4U Corsair, and a Curtiss JN-4 Jenny.

METRO DETROIT — After the Detroit Arsenal of Democracy Museum lost the ability to store its vintage military vehicles on the city of Warren’s Department of Public Works property, Koucar Management stepped up to provide a large indoor storage space in Detroit.

HAZEL PARK — A tragic accident recently occurred during a military training exercise, killing a 2018 graduate of Hazel Park High School.  Sgt. Matthew Bylski died in a vehicle rollover Dec. 12 at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, located in Oceanside, Calif.

EASTPOINTE — When James “Skip” Liberty left for Vietnam in 1968, his Uncle Gus gave him a Super 8 camera.

WEST BLOOMFIELD — In 1972, a group known as the Walnut Lake Women’s Club erected a memorial for military veterans on a site located at 2075 Walnut Lake Road in West Bloomfield.

NOVI — Residents at Brookdale Senior Living and Novi Lakes Health Campus who served in the armed forces were honored with special ceremonies ahead of Veterans Day.

SOUTHFIELD — After 71 years, Capt. William Nelson Coombs returned home to his final resting place, Acacia Park Cemetery in Southfield, Oct. 5.

NOVI — The 44th annual National POW/MIA Recognition Day was celebrated in Novi Sept. 15 with the 37th annual “Michigan Remembers” ceremony at the prisoner of war and missing in action memorial at Oakland Hills Memorial Gardens, at 12 Mile and Novi roads.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — One of America’s first military planes returned to Selfridge as the on-base Selfridge Military Air Museum took delivery of a rare Curtiss JN-4 Jenny biplane on Aug. 11.

SOUTHFIELD — Polish Americans gathered in Section No. 5 of Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield to honor the “Forgotten Volunteers of the Blue Army” with a monument and tombstone dedication recently.

WARREN — This month, World War II veteran Alfred Bury will reach a milestone. On July 21, the Warren resident will turn 100 years old, or as some would say, 100 years young.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — When military planes roar by for a flyover, onlookers usually spot some of the U.S. Air Force’s fastest and flashiest jets. But on June 27, two unsung heroes of military aviation took off from Selfridge Air National Guard Base for a statewide tour in their honor.
