Volleyball playoffs right around the corner
Posted October 30, 2013
The volleyball state tournament gets underway with districts, which tip off Nov. 4.
Here’s a look at where each of the local teams will get the tourney started.
First-round matchups take place Nov. 4, semifinals are Nov. 6 and finals are Nov. 8 unless otherwise noted.
Class B at Warren Fitzgerald
Ferndale High volleyball coach Stacy Schock remembers seeing the transformation in her team. It went from one that was working mostly on fundamentals and getting to know each other’s games to a squad that is looking to make some noise in the postseason.
The Eagles were taking on Southfield High in a match that went five games, ultimately won by Southfield.
“It came down to the wire. They put it all on the court and lost by two points. The girls wanted that so bad and played so hard for it,” Schock said. “Every single person on the team contributed. It was an overall team effort, and at that point, I was really impressed with the heart that they had.”
Ferndale opens the playoffs with Detroit Central Collegiate in the first round at 5 p.m. The winner plays Detroit Old Redford in a semifinal at 5 p.m.
On the other side of the bracket, Hazel Park High meets Warren Fitzgerald at 7 p.m. in the first round. The winner takes on Ferndale University at 7 p.m. in a semifinal.
The championship is 5 p.m.
Schock said that the only squad in the tournament that her team has experience with is Hazel Park, which beat the Eagles in a five-game match earlier in the season. Hazel Park also beat Fitzgerald this year.
Schock said she’s excited that her team has a chance to show how much it’s improved.
“We look pretty good right now. We were working on some things throughout the season, and we’re seeing improvement in our consistency,” she said. “We’re playing a lot smarter volleyball and making good decisions on the court.”
Class A at Southfield-Lathrup
Berkley High drew a bye in its first round. The Bears take on the winner of Royal Oak High and Oak Park High at 7 p.m. in a semifinal.
On the other side of the draw, Southfield-Lathrup and Birmingham Groves both had a bye in the first round and meet in a semifinal at 5:30 p.m.
The championship is 5:30 p.m.
