Third annual Shores-Pointes Adventure Triathlon slated for July 20

ST. CLAIR SHORES — An event that tests the endurance and mettle of athletes of various levels returns this summer, as the third annual Shores-Pointes Adventure Triathlon is set to take place July 20 at Blossom Heath Park in St. Clair Shores.
An adventure triathlon, triathlon relay, duathlon and 5k run/walk will be offered, with each event starting and ending at Blossom Heath Park. The events are slated to begin at 7 a.m. July 20.
Registration for the triathlon ($65), duathlon ($65) and triathlon relay ($135) is available online at www.shorespointestri.com. Registration is open until July 16 or until the maximum 300 participants register for the event. Registration rates increase May 17, according to event coordinator Lynda Charow, who established the race in 2011 after competing in a number of marathons.
All participants planning on participating in the triathlon, tri-relay or duathlon are required to have a USA Triathlon license. The one-day license will be added to online registration for participants who are not members of the USAT, according to the event website.
In 2011, 191 endurance enthusiasts participated, according to Charow. The 2012 edition of the triathlon saw more than 250 athletes take part, she said.
The triathlon consists of a 2.1-mile kayak ride, followed by an 11.1-mile bike ride and a 5k run down Lake Shore/Jefferson in St. Clair Shores.
The duathlon comprises a 5k run, an 11.1-mile bike ride and a second 5k.
Athletes participating in each event are responsible for providing their own equipment, according to Charow.
Awards will be handed out in several age categories in the triathlon and duathlon.
Proceeds from the event will once again go to the athletic departments at local high schools: Grosse Pointe North, Grosse Pointe South, St. Clair Shores Lakeview, St. Clair Shores Lake Shore and St. Clair Shores South Lake.
Sponsors have been secured this year, so one team of three students from each school can compete without cost, Charow said.
Packet pickup for bicyclists and kayakers will be held from 4-8 p.m. July 19 at Blossom Heath Park. Participants are asked to drop off kayaks and bikes at this time. Race day packet pickup for 5k participants will be held from 5-6:20 a.m. July 20. All kayaks must be in place at this time.
Charow said she is also looking for volunteers to assist during packet pickup and on race day. Volunteers are needed to help transfer kayaks to and from the water, to give participants water at various checkpoints and for other jobs.
Students who need community service hours are welcome, Charow said. The Macomb County Sheriff’s Department Marine Division, Coast Guard, St. Clair Shores Police boat and the St. Clair Shores Power Squadron are providing additional security along the kayak course.
