STERLING HEIGHTS — The St. Clair Shores South Lake High boys golf team is in a tight race with Warren Cousino for the Macomb Area Conference Gold Division title.

A win would give the Cavaliers their first league title since going back-to-back in 2008 and 2009.

“It’d be nice to have a banner up in the gym,” said senior Bryan Cloud.

South Lake, which was 7-1 MAC Gold at press time, finished third in the Gold last season. Cavs coach Paul Cusumano said the team’s success this season stems from returning several players from that 2012 team.

“Some of the guys have been on the team two, three, even four years,” Cusumano said. “I have kids who are dedicated to the game.

“They’re not just out here playing during the season. They play in the offseason, too, because they genuinely like the game. That’s what makes them good. It’s always better when the kids actually want to do something.”

Cusumano said his group, led by Cloud and junior Jacob Troyer, is solid from top to bottom. Those two — with a combined seven years of varsity experience — are the team’s definite No. 1 and No. 2 players, according to Cusumano.

The South Lake coach said Nos. 3 through 6 are all solid players, as well, adding they all can step up and perform if a teammate is having an off day.

“Our biggest strength is we play as a team,” Cusumano said. “We’re a steady group. I don’t have a kid who’s going to shoot 10-under par, but I don’t have anybody who’s going to shoot 10 over par, either.”

“It’s good to know the guys on the team have your back, and if you shoot a bad score, you have somebody to pick you up,” Troyer said.

Troyer added playing with a steady head is key to having success on the links. He said each player does their best to stay focused, concentrating on the next shot and not the last.

Cusumano said in order for his team to have success in the postseason — the 2013 Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 districts begin May 29 — Cavs golfers need to improve on their consistency. He said his team’s playoff prospects hinge on repetitions during practice and matches, adding that winning the MAC Gold title would give the South Lake golfers some confidence going into the postseason.

South Lake will play in a D-2 regional May 30 at the Maple Lanes Golf Club in Sterling Heights.

“It’s just a matter of playing, and being comfortable and being relaxed. They need to relax, play golf and have a good time, and if they do that, they can do well.”

The Cavs next match is against Lake Shore and Lakeview in the St. Clair Shores City Championships, set for 2:30 p.m. May 22 at the St. Clair Shores Country Club.
