EAST LANSING - Grosse Pointe South's girls basketball team came close to winning the Class A state championship, but ended up losing a last-second thriller to Grand Haven March 17 at Michigan State University's Breslin Center.
The Blue Devils carried the play through the first three quarters, but Grand Haven made a late charge and won 54-53.
"We just had great effort," South coach Kevin Richards said. "I'm proud of the girls."
Freshman Cierra Rice led the Blue Devils with 14 points; junior Claire DeBoer added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Caitlin Moore recorded 12 points and 12 rebounds, and senior Catherine Palazzolo tacked on 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior Shar'Rae Davis and junior Abby Cole led Grand Haven with 19 and 18 points, respectively.
The Blue Devils finish the season 23-4, while Grand Haven lifts the championship trophy at 27-1.
