Seaholm softball excited about postseason
Posted May 29, 2013
As the playoffs approach, Birmingham Seaholm softball coach Bill Schuerman’s optimism grows.
The Maples are young in the outfield and in the circle, but have been stellar at the plate, with five players hitting over .400.
The district is June 1 and hosted by rival Birmingham Groves. The Maples take on Southfield-Lathrup at 10 a.m. The other side of the bracket has West Bloomfield High meeting the winner of Bloomfield Hills Marian and Groves, played after press time.
The championship is 2 p.m.
Seaholm is quite familiar with all the potential opponents, as Lathrup is the only squad the Maples haven’t faced.
“We kind of know what we’re getting into,” Schuerman said.
Earlier in the season, Seaholm beat West Bloomfield twice, split a doubleheader with Marian and lost two to Groves.
Schuerman said that Groves is the favorite in the tournament, but his team knows it can play with the Falcons.
The Maples led the first game of their doubleheader 8-5 with two outs before some untimely mistakes cost them.
“We just didn’t finish it,” Schuerman said. “I think we competed very well with them in the first game, and if we get a chance to meet them in the district final, we can do well.”
At the plate, senior captain Jordan Lenington leads, hitting over .450. She committed to play for University of Detroit Mercy next spring.
“She’s probably one of the top five players in Oakland County, and probably one of the toughest outs,” Schuerman said.
Fellow senior captain Lexi Hamilton is batting over .420.
“She’s kind of the power-hitter, but still batting over .420,” the coach said. “Those guys lead with the (one-two) punch.”
The coach added that his squad has won its share of 14-13 games, but ultimately, its fate in districts depends on its defense.
