ROCHESTER HILLS — The Rochester College men's basketball team started its season off with an 80-61 victory against Redeemer Univeristy College Oct. 17 at Lutheran Northwest High School in the inaugural Travis Bass Classic basketball tournament.
While an opening-game win is a nice way to start a season, even more important than that is what the tournament represents. According to a prepared release, the tournament is named in honor of Travis Bass, who was a friend of Rochester College men's baskettball head coach Klint Pleasant.
The two were teammates on the Abilene Christian University football team in the 1990s. Bass passed away from ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, in 2011.
The tournament was scheduled to run from Oct. 17-20, with the sale of tickets, t-shirts, and concessions being donated in Bass' honor to the ALS Association.
Having the opportunity to host a tournament in his friend's honor meant something to Pleasant.
"It means so much to me," he said. "I was trying not to get emotional, but Travis — I can't describe how close we were. We were just so close. He meant so much to me. We've been (wanting) to do this for him to honor his memory. It was really neat to honor him. His parents were listening on the radio. Love for people to bring some awareness for this disease and donate some money to research."
Here are the remaining games scheduled to be played at the tournament:
AT 7 p.m. Oct. 18 Rochester College (men) vs. Robert Morris University-Springfield; At 9 p.m. Oct. 18 Rochester College (women) vs. Robert Morris University-Springfield.
At noon, Oct. 19 the Rochester College men's team is scheduled to face Redeemer College University; at 2 p.m., Rochester College University women's team is scheduled to play Redeemer College University.
Although neither team from Rochester College is scheduled to be in action Oct. 20, the school is scheduled to host two games.
At 2 p.m., Robert Morris (women) is scheduled to face St. Clair (Canada), with the men's team from Robert Morris scheduled to face Lambton at 4 p.m.
All the games are scheduled to take place at Rochester Hills Lutheran High Northwest High School.
