AUBURN HILLS — In the program's first-ever home game, Oakland University's club football team defeated Columbus State Community College 36-26 in front of a crowd filled with plenty of supporters Oct. 5 at the Auburn Hills Civic Center Park.
The win improved Oakland's record to 3-0 in its inaugural season, and as impressive of a start as that may be, perhaps even more impressive is the kind of support the Golden Grizzlies received from their fans.
"They were great," head coach Al Manfroni said of the crowd. "It really helps, especially when things get tough; that's when the crowd starts to pick you up. It's been great."
The recognition the football team has received hasn't exactly escape the attention of quarterback Brandon Tucker.
"Being at home, it's just electric here," he said. "They're recognizing us a lot more than what they were. Lot of fan support now."
While the Golden Grizzlies were able to walk away with a still unblemished record, it doesn't mean there wasn't some nervous moments for Oakland fans. At one point in the third quarter, Oakland held a 29-14 lead, but after Columbus State scored two unanswered touchdowns, by the end of the quarter the Golden Grizzlies lead had been cut to three, as they led 29-26 heading into the final quarter of play.
It was Tucker's third touchdown run of the game that helped to seal the victory for Oakland, giving the Golden Grizzlies a 36-26 lead with 5:16 remaining in the game.
Oakland also got touchdowns from Nick Taylor and Benny Sorrentino.
The Golden Grizzlies are next scheduled to be in action at 2 p.m. Oct. 12 in a road game against Wright State. Oakland is next scheduled to play at home at 4 p.m. Oct. 19 against Miami (OH) University.
