New football league to hold tryout at Mount Clemens High April 13
April 11, 2014
MOUNT CLEMENS — Tryouts for roster spots with the Detroit Cougars football team will take place at noon April 13 at Mount Clemens High School.
The Panthers, one of four teams in the Rivals Professional Football League, will play their home games at Mount Clemens High, 155 Cass Ave.
This will be the first season for the Rivals league, with four preseason and six regular season games scheduled to take place this spring and summer. Schedules can be found at www.rivals2014.com.
League scouts, along with coaches from each team, will be on hand at the tryouts, which will be similar to the NFL Combine. During the tryout, scouts will record each player’s height, weight, 40-yard dash, 3 cone drill, broad jump, vertical jump, and evaluate them in position specific drills.
Each athlete will be able to workout at one position of their choice. At the conclusion of the tryout, the scouts and coaches will decide on players who could contribute to their team and that they would like to possibly draft or invite to camp. Each team — the Panthers, Akron Blaze, Chicago Kings and Southern Michigan Mustangs, will give out 80 camp invitations throughout the league tryout tour. Each team will make their draft selections from the 80 camp invitations.
The draft is slated for 4 p.m. April 26 at Mount Clemens High.

Romeo remained undefeated by defeating Macomb Dakota 26-14 in a Macomb Area Conference crossover that paired two of the top-ranked teams in Michigan. Romeo’s defense came into the game having surrendered just 13 points all season, and helped seal the win with a safety and interception return for touchdown by Brad Tanner in the fourth quarter. Romeo earned its first win against Dakota since 2010.
