Bloomfield Hills Marian wins first district title in 10 seasons
June 1, 2013
BEVERLY HILLS — For the first time in 10 years, the Bloomfield Hills Marian softball team is district champions.
The Mustangs beat Birmingham Seaholm 7-4 June 1 at Birmingham Groves for the Division 1 title.
“It’s very special. They didn’t show any nerves at all. We just played the game,” Marian coach Mike Milczarski said.
Marian trailed 4-3 in the top of the sixth until freshman Lauren Ogurek connected for a two-run home run.
“I was nervous, but I knew I had my whole team behind me, and Kelli (Conway) was pitching great, and I knew we had a lot of big bats on this team, so I knew we could pull through,” Ogurek said.
Conway earned the win for Marian.
Seaholm put runners on second and third in the bottom half of the sixth, but Conway was able to get out of the jam.
“The pressure was on, but I think we executed well and held them, so that was good,” Conway said.
Seaholm coach Bill Schuerman said his team executed well, too.
“All in all, it was a pretty good game from both teams,” he said. “We hit a lot of balls hard, they were just caught by them.”
Up next, Marian takes on the winner of the Walled Lake Northern district at 10 a.m. June 8 at Novi High.

Romeo remained undefeated by defeating Macomb Dakota 26-14 in a Macomb Area Conference crossover that paired two of the top-ranked teams in Michigan. Romeo’s defense came into the game having surrendered just 13 points all season, and helped seal the win with a safety and interception return for touchdown by Brad Tanner in the fourth quarter. Romeo earned its first win against Dakota since 2010.
