BERKLEY/FERNDALE — It took extra sessions, but the soccer seasons for Berkley High and Ferndale High came to a close in Division 2 districts.

Berkley fell to Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood 2-1 in overtime May 28 at Farmington High in its opener.

The Bears led 1-0 before Cranbrook knotted the game five minutes into the second half.

“They did well to keep us off the scoreboard the rest of the game,” Berkley coach Matthew Brzezinski said. “It was definitely a struggle to break them down defensively. They play a very defensive style with people packed behind the ball, which made it difficult for us to play the quick soccer that we like to play.”

Brzezinski said that the stat sheet heavily favored his Bears, saying that his team held possession 85 percent of the game and double the scoring chances.

“By looking at the stats, you would have thought we won the game, but give credit to them for not allowing a lot of our shots to be quality shots. It made it difficult to get any positive scoring chances.”

The Eagles, with Brzezinski at the helm for his first season, finish the season 7-8-3 overall.

“I am not one to pay much attention to where we are in the league or how we finished during the season, because I think it’s distracting, in my eyes. In looking back at it now, we finished 6-5-1 (in the Oakland Activities Association White Division), which was actually second place,” Brzezinski said. “I’m very proud of the team. They played very well with a new staff, including myself, and they played a different style and mentality.

“They picked it up right away, and I couldn’t ask for a better group of girls as a first year coach. They gave a phenomenal effort through the whole season.”

Ferndale fell to Hazel Park High 2-1 in double overtime May 29 at Hazel Park in a semifinal.

In other playoff action:
Berkley softball lost to Warren Cousino 10-0 May 29 at Cousino in a D-1 district opener and Ferndale fell to Hazel Park 13-7 May 30 at Clawson High in its district.

In baseball, Ferndale lost to Hazel Park 7-6 May 30 at Clawson and Berkley lost to Warren De La Salle 5-3 May 31 at Cousino.

The Bears beat Warren Cousino 3-2 May 29 in its district opener.
