Some local collegiate athletes have received recognition for accomplishments in their respective sport.
Here’s a list of athletes who have been recognized.
Bryana Opalewski (Fraser High School) was selected All-Region, All-MCCAA, and first team All-Conference for her play with Macomb Community College’s softball team. Opalewski was also selected as Macomb's 2013-14 Female Athlete of the Year.
Erin Schuch (L’Anse Creuse North), also from Macomb’s softball squad, was chosen as an All-MCCAA honorable mention.
Andrea Deneweth (Sterling Heights Stevenson) and Maggie Irvine (Rochester High), both of whom suited up for Oakland Community College’s softball team, were each selected to the NJCAA District H All-Tournament team.
Brandon Wilks (Southfield-Lathrup) from the University of Detroit Mercy was selected as the Horizon League Men’s Track Freshman of the Year.
University of Detroit Mercy lacrosse player Scott Drummond (Birmingham Seaholm) was an All-MAAC second-team selection.
Brandon Beauregard (Pontiac Notre Dame Prep), Joe Gifford (Pontiac Notre Dame Prep), Andy Hebden (Birmingham Brother Rice) and Joe MacLean (Birmingham Detroit Country Day), also from Detroit’s lacrosse team, were selected to the 2014 MAAC men’s lacrosse All-Academic team.
Griffin Harms (Birmingham Groves) was a second-team All-GLIAC selection for his play with Wayne State University’s baseball team.
Jen Rock (Utica Eisenhower) was selected All-America in the 10k event at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship. It was just the second season for Wayne State’s women’s outdoor track program, and Rock’s selection as an All-America is a first in program history.
Kayla Scott (Rochester Adams), who swam for Wayne State University, has been selected to receive the 2014 GLIAC Winter Sports Commissioner’s Award. Scott is a two-time recipient of an award that presented to student-athletes who “excel both in the classroom and on the fields of play,” according to Wayne State’s athletic website.
