ST. CLAIR SHORES — The Harrison Township L'Anse Creuse volleyball team began its quest for a second straight Michigan High School Athletic Association Class A district title with a 3-0 win over Roseville High in a 2013 MHSAA Class A district quarterfinal played Nov. 4 at St. Clair Shores Lake Shore.
The Lancers (29-7-2) advance to meet the host Shorians (21-8-4) in a district semifinal set for 5:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at Lake Shore.
L'Anse Creuse ramped up its play after the first game, which it won 25-20. The Lancers won game two 25-9 and game three 25-11.
The first game saw four ties and three lead changes. Roseville (18-15-3) led early on in games two and three but couldn't sustain those leads.
"We're slow starters. We very rarely win game one. That's usually how it is," said first-year L'Anse Creuse coach Derek Ledwidge, who guided the Lancers to a share of the Macomb Area Conference Red Division title.
"We're finishers. It's happened all season. Right before game two, I asked the girls if they were surprised at how close the first game was and they said 'no,' but they stepped it up after that. We made some errors in the first game. It's never the other team. It's always us, and once we clean those things up, we're fine."
Roseville coach Tom Pfeifer said his team didn't play to its potential. He said the group worked hard in practice and pushed themselves, but couldn't get it done at game time.
"We just couldn't hit the ball. We just couldn't connect," Pfeifer said. "It was just that one day every coach regrets. Everything that could go wrong went wrong."
L'Anse Creuse and Roseville played in a Class A district final in 2012, which the Lancers won. It was the program's first district title since 2009.
