Lake Shore boys soccer team bests Sterling Heights High 3-2
Shorians keep pace with Dakota in MAC Blue race

ST. CLAIR SHORES — Although he described his team's play as "sloppy," St. Clair Shores Lake Shore boys soccer coach Dave Lount said he's pleased his team was able to get by Sterling Heights High 3-2 Sept. 26 at Lake Shore.
"We talk about defensive help, and that wasn't there at times, but I'm glad we got the win," Lount said.
The Shorians (10-1-2, 6-1-2 Macomb Area Conference Blue Division) picked up the win after a tough 1-0 loss to Macomb Dakota Sept. 24. Dakota and Lake Shore are one and two, respectively, in the Blue.
The Stallions (2-8-3, 2-6-1 MAC Blue) started the scoring when junior forward Anh Ho dropped a shot past Shorians keeper Luke Warrick 10 minutes into the first half to give Sterling Heights a 1-0 advantage.
"Anh is playing really well for us," Stallions coach Jack LaTorre said.
About 10 minutes later, Lake Shore senior defenseman Jaylin Harris tallied a goal on a straight-on shot to tie the game at one.
Shorians senior forward Sean VanWambeke put his team ahead for good with a score on a rebound with 5:05 left in the first half, giving Lake Shore a 2-1 lead going into halftime.
Shorians senior midfielder Jeff Sawka gave Lake Shore a 3-1 advantage with 28:59 to play after netting a shot just past Sterling Heights keeper Chuck Grade.
That score proved to be the game winner, as Ho notched his second score of the match with 10:22 left in the game to cut the Lake Shore lead to 3-2. It was Ho's fifth goal of the week.
"We really fought hard in the second half. I had six starters out, so guys came off the bench and did a fantastic job," LaTorre said. "I'm really pleased with the effort."
Lount was pleased with the win, but his team has bigger aspirations. The Lake Shore coach said his team would have to step up its play if those goals are to be accomplished.
"We want to win a state title," Lount said of his Division 2 team. "For us to do that, we've got to play better."
The Shorians next hit the field for a matchup with Grosse Pointe North, set for 4:30 p.m. Sept. 28.
Sterling Heights faces Warren Woods Tower at 4 p.m. Sept. 28 at Tower.
