L’Anse Creuse cheer team wins MAC White title

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — The 2013-14 edition of the Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse cheer team is a group that has not become complacent at any point of the season.
“They knew there was always things they could do to get better,” Lancers coach Jaclyn Delamielleure said. “They’ve done all they could to improve, and that’s not always easy to do for high school athletes because other things can get in the way.”
That determination led to L’Anse Creuse capturing the Macomb Area Conference White Division title. The Lancers won the last two MAC White meets to claim the title. The team finished third in the first divisional meet Jan. 15.
Delamielleure said the team reflected on its performance in the first league meet and was able to see areas it needed to improve in. The team worked tirelessly to improve its performance, Delamielleure said.
The L’Anse Creuse coach noted winning the division title was a total team effort. Delamielleure said she doesn’t feel the need to select captains to lead the group because all girls had a strong work ethic and were self-starters.
“The girls just naturally pick each other up,” Delamielleure said. “They’re just a close-knit group. Everyone just works so hard every day.”
That work ethic will be key if the team wants to advance in the 2014 Michigan High School Athletic Association state tournament. The district round took place after press time. L’Anse Creuse competed in a 14-team district. The Lancers just missed advancing to regionals last season. The team placed fifth in a district; the top four teams advance to regionals.
“We just missed it last year,” Delamielleure said. “It’s been a goal of ours to advance past districts this year. We’re just going to have to come out and perform, and hopefully, we come out on top.”

Country Day, which had outscored its opponents 78-7 in the district round, advanced to the state semifinals for the second year in a row.
