Hero's welcome for Woods-Shores Little League
August 23, 2013
The Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores Little League team returned home from Williamsport, Pa., after representing the Great Lakes Region in the Little League World Series and was greeted by a crowd of cheering relatives and supporters Aug. 22 at Grosse Pointe Woods City Hall.
The squad was eliminated from the tournament following a 6-5 loss to Urbandale, Iowa, Aug. 17.
The loss put the Woods-Shores squad at 0-2, ending the team’s quest for a championship.
The Woods-Shores squad battled back to tighten up the elimination game. Woods-Shores was down 6-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning, but plated five runs in the stanza, including a three-run home run by Jack Vyletel to make it 6-5.
The Woods-Shores team lost its opener, 3-0, to Chula Vista, Calif., in seven innings Aug. 16 and was no-hit by Grant Holman. Woods-Shores pitcher Chad Lorkowski allowed just one hit in six innings of work, but was pulled after he hit the 85-pitch mark, which is all that is allowed to starting pitchers in a game. Lorkowski struck out 12 in the contest.
The Woods-Shores team is just the 10th team from Michigan to reach Williamsport in the 66-year history of the LLWS. A squad from Hamtramck won the championship in 1959. Taiwan (17) has the most LLWS titles.
