BEVERLY HILLS — It was a sea of blue when Birmingham Groves and Birmingham Seaholm volleyball met Sept. 19.

Groves hosted the match, which featured both squads wearing different shades of blue to help raise money for The Arthritis Foundation.

Fans also donned the colors with all proceeds from the event going to the charity.

“We tried really hard to raise money for a great cause that means a lot to us,” Groves senior Jessica Mooney said. “So I was happy to see all our peers here supporting us.”

The Falcons raised roughly $3,000 during the event with the help of a bake sale and the shirts.

As for the match, the fans were also entertained. Seaholm won in five games 22-25, 24-26, 25-9, 25-16 and 15-11.

“We were more intense and served tougher,” Seaholm coach Heather Lippert said of her team’s turnaround. “This was also a charity game and we were glad to do it.”

In the fourth game, Groves led 6-1 before the Maples made a push.

“It never feels good to lose to your cross-town rival, but the reason for the match was for charity, and we did a heck of a job,” Groves coach Jennie Brown said.
