WARREN — The boys and girls track teams from Macomb Dakota and Macomb Lutheran North proved to be the strongest in Macomb County, as the two teams swept the 2014 Macomb County Track and Field Championships.

Dakota’s teams were tops in Division 1, while Lutheran North won the Division 2-3-4 meets.

The county championships took place May 22 at Warren Mott.

“We told the kids how proud we were of their work ethics,” Dakota coach Mike Pimpa said. “That Thursday before Memorial Day is traditionally a day that the seniors have as a ‘senior skip day,’ but everyone was in class, and they performed well at the county meet.”

Division 1
Dakota’s boys tallied 80 points, outpacing Warren De La Salle, which notched 62 points. The Cougars’ girls scored 83 points to win their second straight county championship. Utica High finished second with 80 points.

“The (Dakota) program has had a lot of success for some time now,” Pimpa said. “We’ve been able to get the athletes to buy into what we’ve been trying to accomplish, and they know what it takes to win.”

On the boys side, St. Clair Shores Lake Shore finished third with 48 points. Rounding out the top five were Romeo (46 points) and Anchor Bay (44).

Clinton Township Chippewa Valley’s girls placed third with 48 points, followed by Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse (40). Mott’s and Romeo’s girls tied for fifth with 39 points each.
