BEVERLY HILLS — Last week was the nail-biter, the one that came down to the absolute wire.
This week, well, everyone got to relax a bit.
Seven days after winning a district title by a 14-12 margin against Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, the Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day football team rolled into the Division 4 semifinals in convincing fashion, beating Grosse Ile High 47-14 at home Saturday.
“This was a big one,” coach Dan MacLean said. “We started a little slow, throwing an early interception and then having a punt blocked. But while we were down, we kept our poise and hung in.”
Grosse Ile, which scored 70 points in its district final a week ago, took a 7-0 lead seven minutes into the game after blocking a Country Day punt.
Trailing by one score, though, the Yellowjackets took over.
Maurice Ways hauled in a 75-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Wiegers 58 seconds into the second quarter, and before halftime, Richard Wilson scored on runs of 8 and 11 yards, giving the home team a 21-7 lead at the break.
Wiegers hit brother Tristin Wiegers with a 15-yard touchdown early in the third; Joe Bergin returned an interception 30 yards for a score; and Wilson caught a 28-yard touchdown pass with 3:41 remaining in the third to give Country Day a 41-14 lead after three.
Wilson added his third touchdown on a 5-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
“We had some real good balance and got some big plays,” MacLean said. “We had a big play in the second quarter on that touchdown pass that really got these guys rolling.”
Asked if he was concerned at all with Grosse Ile’s offense, given the fact it scored 70 last week, MacLean just laughed.
“Very concerned,” he said. “But we had a great week of practice. We got the guys' attention, and we were ready for this. We were able to neutralize a lot of what they wanted to do.”
Tyler Wiegers completed 14-of-20 passes for 214 yards and three scores.
Wilson led the rushing attack with 100 yards on 18 carries.
Ways had seven catches for 126 yards and one score.
Country Day (10-2) faces Saginaw Swan Valley (10-2) in a semifinal at 1 p.m. Nov. 17 at Ortonville-Brandon.
Grosse Ile ends its season 10-2.
