When the 2012 cross country began, Southfield Christian senior Evan Carter was prepared to push himself as far as he could for the results he wanted.
“‘If I collapse, I collapse,’ is what he told me as we talked about the season and what he wanted to do,” coach Tim Crouch said with a laugh. “He was very motivated this year.”
Carter didn’t actually collapse, but he had the best season of his four-year career at Southfield Christian, capping it off Nov. 3 by placing 13th overall in the Division 4 state finals at the Michigan International Speedway.
“This year was just fantastic,” Carter said last week. “I mean, I’ve enjoyed all four years, but when you are a senior, you put a lot more into it. You know it’s your last shot.”
Carter made the most of it, finishing the race in 16 minutes, 26.9 seconds.
It was his fourth consecutive year running in the state finals, but marked his best time and best finish in any of the previous three.
“My plan was to go out and run my race,” Carter explained. “Every year since I first got there as a freshman, it’s just surreal. The whole environment is so big. But this was different because it’s the last race I had for Southfield Christian. I knew I had to go out with a good one.”
He did, yet he was hardly surprised by it.
Crouch said Carter had been building toward the final all year, slowly but surely improving his times and overall stride as the season moved forward.
He won all three jamborees in the Michigan Independent Athletic Conference on his way to being named the conference Most Valuable Player.
He then earned a 33rd-place finish at the Oakland Country Championships, which he called one of his better runs of the season, placed second at the regional, and then capped it off at the state final.
“In the last mile of the finals, I think I really pushed myself,” Carter said. “I saw myself passing a big group of people and was able to actually do it to earn the finish I did.”
