TRENTON — This past weekend saw more than 40 high school hockey teams from across the Midwest descend upon Kennedy Ice Arena in Trenton for the MIHL Prep Showcase.
All three Grosse Pointe schools sent their teams to the showcase, with each having different results.
Blue Devils take two
Grosse Pointe South earned two victories over the weekend, but they came in opposite fashion.
In their showcase opener, the Blue Devils raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first period against Plymouth behind two goals from Andrew Hyde and one from Dominic Rinaldi and Wyatt Flynn.
Plymouth scored twice in the second period and twice more in the third to send the game to a shootout.
Rinaldi saved the game for South by scoring the lone goal of the shootout.
“We got off to a great start and played the game we wanted to, but we just got away from it and they scored two pretty goals to tie it in the third,” South coach Bobby McKillop said. “We were fortunate to come back and take the shootout.”
In the second game of the weekend, South had to come from behind to beat Grand Rapids Christian 4-3.
After being down 3-1, South got third-period goals from Hyde, Rinaldi and Andrew Bigham.
“We played a much better game overall, but we just had a couple defensive breakdowns and fell behind,” McKillop said. “We did raise the intensity in the third, and there was a role reversal in who was making the defensive mistakes, but we played pretty steady throughout the entire game.”
South is now 17-3-1 this season and will host Allen Park on Feb. 19.
Grosse Pointe North opened its weekend with a 4-3 loss that came in a shootout against Utica Eisenhower.
Nick Cusmano, Nick Murray and JP Navetta scored to pace North to a 3-3 tie in regulation, but Eisenhower scored twice in the shootout to win.
The Norsemen rebounded to beat Mona Shores 6-1 in their second game. Cusmano opened the scoring in the first period, as Navetta, Brendan Nelson and Max Yoshida tallied second-period goals.
Navetta netted another score in the third and Murray capped of the scoring for North. Josh Champney had 21 saves on 22 shots.
The Norsemen moved to 3-16 on the season and will face Plymouth on Feb. 14.
Liggett falls twice
University Liggett lost two tough matchups over the weekend to move its record to 15-4-1.
Liggett lost to Rochester United 4-2 in its first game of the showcase while getting goals from William Yates and Alexander Minanov.
Liggett then fell to Houghton 6-3. Joshua Soyka scored twice, and Vincent Scarfone added a goal for the Knights.
Liggett will take on Grosse Pointe North in its next game on Feb. 15.
