Baseball, softball, soccer, golf teams earn regional berths

The postseason began for sports teams across the state last week, and multiple local squads have made it out of their various districts and earned the right to advance in the playoffs.
After defeating Grosse Pointe North 6-2 in a Division 1 district semifinal game hosted by North, Grosse Pointe South’s baseball team went on to defeat St. Clair Shores Lakeview 11-1 to capture a district championship.
South is next scheduled to play at 10 a.m. June 8 in a regional semifinal game against Livonia Stevenson at South. The regional final is scheduled for 3 p.m., also June 8.
Grosse Pointe Woods University’s baseball team will also see regional action, as the Knights defeated Sterling Heights Parkway Christian 15-0 in a Division 4 district final June 3 at Parkway Christian.
The Knights are next scheduled to play at 10 a.m. June 8 in a regional semifinal game at Liggett against Royal Oak Shrine. The winner advances to the final, scheduled for 2 p.m. the same day.
Liggett’s softball team also laid claim to a district championship, as the Knights beat Sterling Heights Parkway Christian 15-0 June 3 at Parkway Christian. Liggett is scheduled to face Wixom St. Catherine at noon June 8 in a regional semifinal game at Liggett.
Grosse Pointe South’s girls soccer team also got off to a good start in the postseason, defeating Grosse Pointe North 3-1 in a Division 1 district championship June 1 at North. South was scheduled to face Anchor Bay in a regional semifinal contest June 5, after press time. The winner advances to the regional final, scheduled for 6 p.m. June 7 at North.
Liggett’s soccer team also advanced to regionals after defeating Marine City Cardinal Mooney in a Division 4 district final game June 1 at Liggett. The Knights were scheduled to face Plymouth Christian in a regional semifinal match June 4, after press time, with the winner moving on to the regional final, scheduled for 7 p.m. June 7 at Madison Heights Bishop Foley.
All three local golf teams also advanced to the regional portion of the playoffs. South won a Division 1 district tournament May 31 at Greystone Golf Club in Washington; North finished in fourth place in the same district. Both teams are scheduled to tee off June 6 at a regional hosted by Warren De La Salle at Orchards Golf Club in Washington Township. Contact the host school for a scheduled start time.
Liggett finished in fifth place at Division 4 district tournament at Heather Highlands in Holly. The Knights were scheduled to take part in a regional tournament hosted by Southfield Christian June 5, after press time.
