ST. CLAIR SHORES — Eleven players scratched the scoresheet for the St. Clair Shores South Lake boys basketball team in its 66-31 Dec. 7 win over Center Line High.

It was the home opener for the Cavaliers (1-0), who were led by senior forward Amier Gilmore and senior guard Robert Davis, who each scored 15 points.

“I didn’t set out to lead the team in scoring. I was just trying to do what I needed to do to help the team win,” said Davis, who scored 10 points in the first half.

South Lake led tip to buzzer and jumped out to a 24-3 lead after the first quarter. Center Line (0-2) battled back in the second frame and outscored South Lake 13-10 in the quarter. The Cavs still led 34-16 at halftime.

South Lake’s pressing, trapping style on defense frustrated Center Line for most of the night. The Cavs held the Panthers to six points in the third quarter and led 53-22 heading into the final frame. South Lake recorded 16 steals in the game.

“I thought our defense was great tonight,” South Lake coach Kurt Wilson said. “We did really well on that end. I thought we boxed out really well too. A lot of teams don’t box out anymore. We’ve put an emphasis on that.”

“We’re young; we’re inexperienced. I only brought back two guys who really played for us last year,” said Center Line coach Chris Manchester, who led his team to a Macomb Area Conference Bronze Division title last season. “I scheduled tough for us to get these guys some experience against some good competition. We’re trying to get ready for league play.”

Junior forward Deshawn Watson led Center Line with 11 points off the bench.

South Lake nailed five 3-pointers to Center Line’s one.

The Cavs' next game is against St. Clair Shores Lake Shore at 7 p.m. Dec. 12 on the road.

The Panthers next take the court for a matchup with Almont High at 7 p.m. Dec. 8 on the road.
