Road rage incident broken up by onlooker

MADISON HEIGHTS — Two drivers may be facing charges after becoming embroiled in road rage and taking their anger out in a shoving match and fistfight at a traffic light in Madison Heights.
The incident occurred around noon on Nov. 10. Two motorists were reportedly driving south on Dequindre when one cut off the other in traffic between Whitcomb and 13 Mile roads. One driver was in a pickup truck; the other was in a car.
When they reached the stoplight at 13 Mile and Dequindre, the drivers of each vehicle got out and began shoving each other in the middle of the road, even throwing a few punches, witnesses told police.
Their vehicles were left idling in the road, holding up traffic. Southbound traffic narrowed to one lane. The light turned green, but the two men continued to scuffle.
The car driver had his 4-year-old son in the car. The other driver had his wife waiting in the truck. It took another motorist to step in and break up the fight.
There were no injuries, but one or both of the men may be facing charges, police said.
“We’re conducting an investigation right now, the investigation being assault and battery and/or reckless driving,” said Madison Heights Police Lt. Robert Anderson. “Both individuals are being investigated and may face charges.”
Anderson said it’s important for drivers to never let their emotions get the best of them while they’re at the wheel and to never forget that they’re driving thousands of pounds of steel at a high rate of speed.
“Don’t engage in road rage, as the signs say on the freeway,” Anderson said. “Think back to how you’ve made mistakes before. Don’t be the person to cast stones. We’ve all done something stupid. Just take a deep breath, and let it go.”
