A Sterling Heights run and walk that raises money for art and trails is getting ready to run its second lap.
The second annual SterlingFAST 5k Run Walk will begin the morning of July 26 at Dodge Park in Sterling Heights. The race is sponsored by bd’s Mongolian Grill and the Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Sterling Heights Community Relations Director Steve Guitar called last year’s turnout impressive.
“We had about 300 for the first year,” he said. “That was remarkable. We’re looking to enhance that.”
According to race director Joe Burns, the number of racers and participants is so far “running ahead of last year’s pace.” Prizes are awarded to the fastest finishers according to gender and age categories.
Burns said the course will follow the same route as last year, and he called it a “fun, fast, family-friendly course.”
“The course starts right on Utica Road, and runners head down Utica Road north toward the Nature Center,” he said. “Then they cross over and turn in to the Nature Center, and they cross over the river. And we take the actual trail system, the asphalt portion of it, back to Dodge Park.”
Burns explained that last year’s run raised roughly $2,400. He said the proceeds were devoted to two causes — just as they will be this year.
Part of the proceeds will go to the Sterling Heights Cultural Commission and its effort to bring art to the City Hall area, Dodge Park and other city areas. The rest of the proceeds will be used to improve the Dodge Park-Clinton River trail system, he said.
Burns also said the race is timed to precede the Saturday opening of the Sterlingfest Art & Music Fair. Besides enjoying the fair’s music, rides and food, Burns said race participants who are 21 or older may also enjoy the beer tent.
“The nice thing about it is the race starts at 9, and the Sterlingfest festival starts at 10,” he said. “So we always tell people, come for the run and stay for the fun.”
The second annual SterlingFAST 5k Run Walk will begin at 9 a.m. July 26 at Dodge Park, 40620 Utica Road in Sterling Heights. A maximum of 1,000 participants has been set.
