Shelby Township announces slew of community events

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Saturday, Oct. 14, and Wednesday, Oct. 18, are two dates that Shelby Township officials would like residents to mark down.

Oct. 14 will be a day full of three family fun events, while Oct. 18 is the date selected for the township’s annual community visioning event to help determine its top 10 priorities for 2018.

The annual Shelby Township Fire Department Open House, the Shelby Township Police Department Community Shred Day and the Halloween Spooktacular all land on Oct. 14.

From 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Oct. 14, residents can dispose of sensitive paperwork at the shred day hosted by the Shelby Township Police Department, the Shelby Community Foundation and Absolute Shreds of Auburn Hills.

The event is part of a community educational program on identity theft.

All shredded documents will be recycled with any plastic or paper bags in which they are brought, but boxes will be returned to those who bring them. The township urges that businesses in Shelby Township bring only two boxes of documents to be shredded.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 14, the Shelby Township Fire Department will welcome the public during its annual open house at its headquarters. The event will include hands-on fire station tours, meet-and-greet opportunities with firefighters, Sparky the dog, fire hose spraying and more.

“People will be able to walk through, look at all of our different trucks, get up close with all of our different types of equipment — like for our dive rescue team and trench rescue team,” Fire Chief Jim Swinkowski said. “There’ll be all types of activities for kids with the bounce house and smoke trailer, as well as our dispatchers and police officers will be there to give insight on the different types of service we offer to the township.”

Beginning at noon, the Shelby Township Parks, Recreation and Maintenance Department will throw its annual Halloween Spooktacular at River Bends Park. The township encourages children to come in costume for a trunk-or-treat, games, crafts and hayrides.

The trunk-or-treat will take place in the park’s 22 Mile Road parking lot. Adults will pass out candy and treats from their vehicles’ trunks. Each family with a participating child must also bring treats to pass out from their vehicle. A prize will be awarded to the best-decorated vehicle.

At 7 p.m. Oct. 18, the township will hold its 2018 Community Visioning Exercise for residents to give input about how to govern the township. The event will take place in the lower level conference room of the municipal building, located at 52700 Van Dyke Ave., south of 24 Mile Road.

“This is an amazing opportunity for our residents to come out and tell local government exactly how they want their tax dollars spent,” Stathakis said. “Because of the priorities and the support of the residents, our board has been able to focus on major issues, such as improving local roads, reforming township pensions, and working to improve facilities like the district court, senior center and library.”

The process began at a Sept. 20 meeting in which department heads offered suggestions of what they feel are the most pressing needs for the township to address. The Board of Trustees offered its input during a Sept. 27 work session.

“Anytime you can add more information to a process like our visioning sessions, it increases the value of the end result,” Township Planner Glenn Wynn said. “By getting input from multiple viewpoints within the township, it creates a very detailed picture of the needs we have to address.”

The Planning and Zoning Department tabulates all of the information gained from the three meetings to set the township’s top 10 priorities.

“I look forward to this meeting every year because of the impact it has on our township,” Stathakis said.
