MOUNT CLEMENS — On March 20, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham and the Traffic Improvement Association of Michigan awarded the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Detroit at Selfridge Air National Guard Base for its commitment to driving safety education.
The men of Air Station Detroit were part of the development of a realistic distracted driving crash video that was filmed in 2011, according to a press release. The video was produced for TIA Michigan’s “Remembering Ally: Distracted Driving Awareness Campaign.” The campaign was named in memory of Ally Zimmerman, a 16-year-old Romeo High School student and Oakland County resident, who was fatally hit by a distracted driver in 2010, the press release said.
“We truly appreciate the ultimate sacrifice that all of you make each day to protect the public and save lives,” Jim Santilli, executive director of TIA Michigan, reportedly said while speaking to the members of Air Station Detroit. “Your professionalism and commitment allowed us to create a distracted driving awareness video right here in Macomb County, which continues to garner international attention.”
