METRO DETROIT — As soon as it’s warm enough to stay outdoors, it quickly becomes classic car show season in metro Detroit. And this year promises another series of shows for people who like to drive or showcase their hot rods, convertibles and more where they can be seen and admired by the public.
As usual, the Woodward Dream Cruise will be coming back, this year Aug. 19. The event’s president, Greg Rassel, said last year’s cruise drew about 750,000 people.
He did not predict any radical changes to the annual summer classic car celebration, adding that the traditional attractions and events from previous years would likely return. He anticipated more announcements about specific plans in the weeks ahead.
Rassel also described the attitude of many of the Dream Cruise’s returning visitors.
“They are truly diehards, and once again, a lot of them come back because it’s a way to meet up with old friends and talk about what they have done to their cars,
features they have improved on, or upkeep that they have done.”
Besides the official Dream Cruise, other car events will take place either simultaneously or during other times this summer.
On Aug. 19, Birmingham will have its own cruise event along South Old Woodward Avenue that draws around 300 classic cars, according to
Marianne Gamboa, public relations specialist for the city of Birmingham. She said the site also tends to draw local media who broadcast live.
“It’s a perfect location,” she said. “It’s less congested there. You can enjoy the cars. … If you want to walk around a little bit more, Old Woodward is completely shut down to traffic.”
