MOUNT CLEMENS — Every summer, just days before the Fourth of July holiday, tens of thousands flock to Mount Clemens for the annual Independence Day Celebration and Fireworks.

The 2017 Downtown Mount Clemens Independence Day Celebration and Fireworks will commence on June 23 with the River Sight and Sound Concert at the gazebo in Clinton Riverfront Park at 8 p.m.

The concert will feature the music of the Groove Council and Kathleen Murray and will be immediately followed by the fireworks show at dusk, which is about 10 p.m.

Downtown Development Authority Director Michelle Weiss said the entire event is being made possible by the Wayne and Joan Webber Foundation, a Clinton Township-based nonprofit organization.

“We’re looking forward to another great night,” Weiss said.

Weiss said prime viewing can be found throughout downtown as the fireworks are launched from the City Hall parking lot on First Street.

Providing the fireworks show again this year is Zambelli, the Pennsylvania-based company that puts on the Detroit fireworks. Weiss said they’re promising a better Mount Clemens show this year, with new and exciting shells with more color.

“It’s different every year,” said Weiss. “We want every year to be fun and exciting.”

Northbound Gratiot Avenue and the Crocker Avenue and Dickinson Street bridges will be closed to vehicle traffic at approximately 7 p.m. Weiss said there will be plenty going on along the streets before the fireworks, like face painting, glow items for sale and food trucks. Weiss said local restaurants and bars will be open for business as well.

Spectators can mark a viewing spot along the Clinton River with a tarp or blanket anytime after 8 a.m. the day of the fireworks. Strollers are welcome, as are picnic baskets and coolers, and people can bring their own food and drinks to watch the show.

Boaters who want a well to park for the day or week can reserve a spot in advance or ride in the day of. To reserve a boat well, call (586) 469-6818, ext. 903.

Mount Clemens Mayor Barb Dempsey said the fireworks show is one of the city’s main summer attractions.

“Both young and old enjoy the spectacular fireworks. This is a great family event and a tradition that has been going on in Mount Clemens for years,” she said. “A special thanks to our sponsors, Wayne and Joan Webber Foundation and Oakland Macomb University. Without their sponsorship, we would not be able to provide this fantastic event for everyone to enjoy.”
