SHELBY TOWNSHIP — An 81-year-old man died following a two-vehicle crash April 27 on 23 Mile Road in Shelby Township.

Shelby Township police received two calls around 11:50 a.m. about a silver Dodge Ram 1500 driving erratically eastbound on 23 Mile Road near Shelby Road. As officers were dispatched to investigate the vehicle, another call came in about an accident between the truck and a box truck at 23 Mile and Central Industrial Drive.

Emergency personnel arrived and attended to the 81-year-old man who had been driving the Ram and the 66-year-old man who was driving the commercial box truck. Both drivers were transported to Troy Beaumont Hospital.

According to police, the Ram driver died at the hospital. Police have not released his name. The driver of the commercial truck was treated and released, police said.

Police closed 23 Mile in both directions for hours while the accident scene was being processed. According to police, alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
