EASTPOINTE — Fresh Choice Market Place will have a new neighbor as early as 2018, as a new Michigan secretary of state branch is under construction at 18809 Nine Mile Road.

Pattah Development, which also built the market 11 years ago, is building the structure that will house the branch.

Clark Pattah, manager of Fresh Choice, said he hopes the branch will bring more traffic to the market.

“We’re hoping to bring not only that, but bring more attractions to the city of Eastpointe — more traffic and more people to the city,” he said.

Pattah is not worried about parking, and he has plans to repave the parking lot.

“With the hours of the grocery store and the hours of the secretary of state, I don’t think (parking) will be a conflict. We’re going to be repaving the entire parking lot to better fit the needs for the grocery store and the secretary of state,” he said.

“As soon as construction is complete, we can do that in the spring,” he added.

Eastpointe Building Official and Director of Community and Economic Development Mary Van Haaren said she knew the secretary of state was “looking for a location.”

“Several years ago, they were looking at that same general location just across the parking lot,” said Van Haaren.

While the development didn’t have to go before the Eastpointe City Council, Eastpointe’s Planning Commission approved the site.

Van Haaren expects the branch to be completed by next year.

“I would anticipate completion and occupancy sometime early in 2018,” she said.

Eastpointe Mayor Suzanne Pixley is “excited” about the addition to the city because she thinks it will be convenient for residents and people in neighboring cities, and she believes the office will shorten wait times, since the nearest branch is in St. Clair Shores on Harper Avenue.

Eastpointe-Roseville Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Linda Weishaupt said the branch is a “great thing for the city of Eastpointe.”

“We welcome them. That’s a great addition to that corner because it will bring in the traffic and it’ll help with the businesses that are already there,” she said.
