EASTPOINTE — Residents can enjoy music from longtime series performer Wally Fitz Jazz to kick off Eastpointe’s Music in the Plaza from 6:30 to 8 p.m. May 24 in the plaza behind City Hall at 23200 Gratiot Ave.

Richard Paul, of the Carey and Paul Group, helps book the bands for the series and said that Fitz is from the area.

“He’s a native of the area and he went to school at East Detroit High School. He knows a lot of people, and when he performs, a lot of people from his class come out to see him. It’s like a minireunion for them,” said Paul.

“All the musicians he uses, these are top-of-the-line musicians. These are people that have performed down at the jazz festival in Detroit with various other bands,” he said.

“When he brings these people together, (attendees) are getting top-of-the-line players,” said Paul.

According to Paul, residents really enjoy Fitz’s performances.

“This is about the fifth or sixth year he’s done it, and the residents always want him back, and I think it’s because they like him. But not only that; he draws in the likes of the local crowd, which is nice because it adds to the flavor of the concert,” he said.

Eastpointe City Manager Steve Duchane said all ages might enjoy the Wally Fitz Jazz band.

“Everyone can enjoy it — jazz is a thoughtful, soulful type of music that makes you feel at ease. All ages can enjoy Wally and the entire series,” said Duchane.

“He’s also said onstage before it’s like a reunion for him to play at Music in the Plaza, so I think it’s great for not only him and his band, but the residents too,” he said.

The city’s website lists the 2017 lineup for Music in the Plaza:
