WATERFORD — With temperatures climbing into the high 80s, it’s almost as if Mother Nature is trying to send a message: The frosts are done, and it’s time to plant.

If you’re ready to get going and get growing, you’re in luck, because the Oakland County Market’s annual Spring Flower Day is coming up Sunday, June 4.

Market Manager Jeremy Brown said the event is always a busy one, with nearly 5,000 visitors heading over to the Waterford venue to shop from dozens of local farmers selling their beautiful annuals, perennials, vegetable starters and much more. There are even local artisans selling garden art and maintenance tools, so you can get everything you need for a beautiful home landscape all in one place.

“Spring Flower Day is always bustling with activity,” Brown said in an email. “Our vendors are excited to showcase their fresh flowers and plants and help customers get the growing season off to a great start.”

If you’re not able to make it out June 4, no worries — there’s plenty of flower fun to be had the rest of the season, with more than 100 farmers and artisans representing 17 Michigan counties making an appearance at the market this season.

Oakland County Parks and Recreation Executive Director Dan Stencil said the market has grown into something of a hot spot in Oakland County during the summer months.

“I think people countywide are starting to see this as a regional attraction,” said Stencil. “If you look at the location of the market, it’s pretty much right at the center of Oakland County. And the accessibility is tremendous, with I-75, Telegraph and Dixie Highway all leading right here. And once they’re here, it’s our job to provide them with educational and recreational experiences.”

In addition to Spring Flower Day, the market will host programming events and workshops with the Michigan State University Extension, the Oakland County Health Department, Oakland County 4-H, Edible WOW magazine and other organizations.

A schedule of events can be found on the market’s page of the Oakland County government website, oakgov.com/parks.

There is no cost for admission to Spring Flower Day, which will be held 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Courtesy wagons will be provided for patrons to use while they shop. Parking is available on-site.
