CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Chippewa Valley wrestling coach Gary Brundirks said finding the right matchups has been key this season because of the holes in the Big Reds’ lineup.

The longtime coach has asked various grapplers on his squad to bump up — or down — weight classes, so the team has a shot at winning team matches. Brundirks, who before the start of the season thought a lack of wrestlers in certain spots would pose a problem, said his team has been without grapplers in the 171, 189, 215 and heavyweight classes.

ROSEVILLE — With his win in the 119-pound division at the Macomb County Wrestling Invitational in December, Roseville High School senior Doug Zundel became the answer to a trivia question.

After taking down five of the county’s top wrestlers in his weight class, the Panthers senior became just the second grappler in the 38-year history of the tournament to win all four years (2008-11) he took part.

Algonac High’s Al Biland had a similar streak from 1983-86.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — St. Clair Shores Lake Shore wrestling coach Dominic Zombo admits he was surprised by his squad’s second-place finish last season in the Macomb Area Conference Blue Division — its first in the league.

“Moving from the Gold to the Blue, I figured we’d be a middle-of-the-pack team,” said Zombo, whose team finished 6-1 in league matches in 2010-11, one match behind division champ Marysville High School. The Lake Shore coach said he expects Marysville to be a tough out this year, too.

AUBURN HILLS — With four brothers having passed through the Roseville High wrestling program, it’s an understatement to say the Nash family has ties to the Panthers.

But with 10 trips to the individual wrestling state finals, eight All-State medals and one state championship to the brothers’ credit, it’s an equal understatement to say the Panthers are in the Nashs’ debt.
