Last season’s record: 1-8
League: Macomb Area Conference Gold Division
Returning starters: Eight
First game: 7 p.m. Aug. 29 vs. Macomb L’Anse Creuse North

Offensive keys:
First-year L’Anse Creuse coach Orande Roy — who was an assistant at Fraser High the previous seven seasons — understands the recent struggles of the program. The Lancers are just 5-49 since the start of the 2013 season. Roy said he, his staff and his players are looking for a way to take a step forward.

Since 2013, the team has averaged just 14 points per contest. Senior wide receiver Tyrese Smith and sophomore wide receiver Keyone Nixon will be counted on to make big plays and boost that scoring output. Sophomore athlete Jaivoin Mason is expected to make an impact too all over the field.

Defensive keys:
Roy hopes to establish success at a program that hasn’t had much. L’Anse Creuse has finished above .500 just twice in the last decade. The program’s last playoff appearance came in 2003. The Lancers have made only three playoff trips since 1957 and have allowed 38 points per game on average over the last six seasons.

Smith, a defensive back, will anchor the defense. Nixon will see a lot of time in the defensive backfield as well.

Coach’s outlook:
“Everything we do is with a purpose,” Roy said. “Our strength is our junior class. We have 38 kids in a freshman camp, so the future is bright at L’Anse Creuse. As far as the MAC is concerned, we’re not on the radar. We’re working to earn respect. We want to give L’Anse Creuse North a good game in the opener so we have a chance to win that jug.”

vs. Macomb L’Anse Creuse North (4-5) — 7 p.m. Aug. 29
The Lancers haven’t had much success against their inter-district rival. The Crusaders lead the series 29-15, including a 31-7 win last year. L’Anse Creuse’s last victory came in 2011.

at Madison Heights Lamphere (1-8) — 7 p.m. Sept. 6
L’Anse Creuse got its only win of 2018 in a 34-13 triumph over Lamphere. This matchup is just the second between the Macomb Area Conference foes. The Lancers put up 16.1 points per game last year, while the Rams scored 12 points per contest.

at Warren Woods Tower (9-2) — 7 p.m. Sept. 13
Tower beat L’Anse Creuse 55-8 last season. The Lancers have struggled recently, winning just five games since 2013.

vs. St. Clair Shores Lake Shore (6-4) — 7 p.m. Sept. 20
Lake Shore beat L’Anse Creuse 58-14 last season to take an 18-14 series lead.

vs. Marysville High (4-5) — 7 p.m. Sept. 27
L’Anse Creuse is 0-3 against Marysville after last season’s 48-6 setback. The Lancers have surrendered at least 40 points in all three meetings.

at Warren Fitzgerald (3-6) — 1 p.m. Oct. 5
Prior to last season’s 40-12 victory for Fitzgerald, these squads had never squared off.

vs. Eastpointe High (4-5) — 7 p.m. Oct. 11
The Lancers and Shamrocks got into a shootout last season, resulting in a 66-40 Eastpointe win. L’Anse Creuse leads the series 7-5. Eastpointe allowed 45.2 points per game last season.

at Sterling Heights High (1-8) — 7 p.m. Oct. 18
Sterling Heights beat L’Anse Creuse 32-12 in 2018 for its only win of the season. Those 32 points were the most the Stallions scored in any game last season. Sterling Heights leads the series 6-5.

vs. Fraser High (1-8) — 7 p.m. Oct. 25
The regular-season finale represents the third time this season that L’Anse Creuse faces another team that went 1-8 last season. The Ramblers bested the Lancers 24-12 in last year’s season finale for their only win of the season. The win gave Fraser a 23-13 lead in the series.
