EASTPOINTE — The man who Eastpointe police said killed a 38-year-old resident in the basement of his home on Ridgecroft Avenue on his birthday has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Eastpointe Public Safety Director George Rouhib said Danny Darnell White, 32, of Detroit, was arrested Sept. 30 by officers conducting surveillance at two locations. Both were homes in the city of Detroit.

“He left a house that was under surveillance. He was immediately apprehended,” Rouhib said. “He lived at the one house. The other one, he frequented.”

Rouhib said White knew the victim but that they were not related.

“Robbery was not the motive,” Rouhib said. “There was some type of altercation that took place in the basement area. We don’t know what the altercation was about. It definitely wasn’t a robbery.

“We  have video that shows he was the only one at the house at the time. He (the victim) was shot several times, and then he (White) left right after,” Rouhib said.

The victim was found by his ex-girlfriend, who arrived at the home near Stephens Road and Interstate 94 with his children and a cake to celebrate his birthday. They discovered the body at about 1:20 p.m. Sept. 29.

White was arraigned Oct. 1 before Judge Kathleen Galen in the 38th District Court on first-degree murder and weapons charges. Bail was set at $1 million cash or surety.

White requested a court-appointed attorney at his arraignment, but a lawyer had yet to be assigned Oct. 7, according to court records.

He was next scheduled to appear in court for a probable cause conference at 8 a.m. Oct. 12, after press time.

First-degree murder is punishable by mandatory life in prison.
