MACOMB TOWNSHIP — Around 4:20 p.m. June 24, Macomb County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the border of Macomb Township and Ray Township at 26 Mile Road, just west of North Avenue, for a crash involving a motorcycle.

The driver of the motorcycle, who later died at the hospital, was identified as 76-year-old David Chapman, of Southgate.

Police say Chapman was traveling westbound on 26 Mile Road, just west of North Avenue, following a friend also on a motorcycle.

Witnesses stated that Chapman left the roadway, drove on the gravel shoulder and then re-entered the roadway.

“As Chapman re-entered the roadway, he collided with a small trailer being pulled by a pickup truck that was traveling eastbound on 26 Mile Road,” a press release states. “The driver of the pickup truck exited his vehicle to look at his trailer and then fled the scene eastbound on 26 Mile Road.”

Police say the truck is described as white, possibly a Chevy, pulling a small black trailer with possible branches or yard bags in the bed. The driver is described as a thin white male.

The motorcycle operator was wearing a helmet, and speed is not believed to be a factor.

On June 28, an update was provided that police are requesting the public’s assistance identifying a person and vehicle of interest.

A photo was taken in the area of 26 Mile and Romeo Plank roads near the time of the incident.
