The Troy Public Library’s International Collection features a glimpse of scenes from around the world.

The work of students at the Longlong Art Studio hangs in the International Collection and depicts scenes from the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the city of Toronto, the Great Wall of China, the Eiffel Tower and the Colosseum in Rome.

Art instructor Longlong Zhou has been instructing students in Troy since 2006. Her students have exhibited their work in the library before, and some of the students’ work has found a permanent home in the library.

In a dedication ceremony at the library May 28, Library Director Cathy Russ thanked the students and Zhou for their paintings.

“Your art has certainly made the library more beautiful,” Russ said. “The vibrancy, life and beauty (of the paintings) doesn’t ever fail to attract attention and bring joy wherever it is.”

“I am so happy to be here as a teacher,” said Zhou. “Art is my life and teaching is my passion.”

A banner inscribed with “Around the World in Art” will be displayed above the students’ paintings.

Troy High School student Mingjia Liu thanked Russ for the opportunity to display her art.

“I had a blast working on the Eiffel Tower,” she said.

“We wanted to celebrate the kids,” Russ said. She explained that one of the visions for the city, overall, is to encourage and welcome diversity.

Displaying the paintings in the International Collection area of the library, which has DVDs, books, magazines and other materials in several languages, “made sense,” Russ said. More than 80 languages are spoken in homes in Troy, according to Troy School District officials.

The Troy library is located at 510 W. Big Beaver Road.
