SOUTHFIELD — Whether you’ve been furloughed, are looking for a new job or just want to upgrade your computer skills, JVS Human Services has a class for you.

Since the pandemic started, JVS Human Services has been providing job seekers options to assist them in gaining employment. Training options include virtual one-on-one meetings with employment specialists and “The Road Ahead” webinars offering advice on subjects like interview techniques on Zoom and writing resumes. Emergency one-on-one financial advice for those impacted by COVID-19 is also available.

The Southfield based nonprofit is now offering free computer skills training webinars starting Sept. 10. The new series is being labeled the “Modern Toolkit” and will have a new class available each week.

JVS has released its first six topics but has plans to introduce more down the line. The first six topics include: SharePoint vs. OneDrive fundamentals Sept. 10, LinkedIn basics Sept. 17, electronic file organization Sept. 24, LinkedIn Advanced for job seekers Oct. 1, intro to Google apps Oct. 8, and Ribbon essentials and beyond in Microsoft Word Oct. 15.

The classes are expected to run for around 30 minutes each week and will be uploaded to the JVS Human Services Facebook page.

“It’s critical to stay current with technology skills and trends,” David B. Hermelin ORT Resource Center Supervisor Lisa Bahm said. “Continued learning really helps improve people’s confidence and have a positive attitude about their employment or even seeking employment.”

With a lot of the country going remote due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, JVS Human Services felt a technology skills program could benefit a wealth of people.

The classes are meant to touch on key components of the topics and to help people sharpen their skills or learn new things.

“We really believe that computer skills are something that can make a difference in employment,” said Jason Charnas, the director of business and career services at JVS Human Services. “Having better computer skills or some more computer skills helps you either to get a better job, to get that next opportunity or simply to find that first opportunity.”

Those who choose to participate in the offered classes will be in good hands, according to Charnas. He said the instructors have a variety of skills they can teach.

Some are teachers that have used these programs extensively, while others come from various technology careers.

“Our instructors are really great at not just knowing the information, but being able to explain it in a straightforward and simple way,” Charnas said.

The Facebook page will be monitored by instructors who will be available to respond to questions. For more detailed instruction, online classes are available for a fee at ed2go.com/hermelinORT.
