ST. CLAIR SHORES — Check out the new skate park and take a tour of St. Clair Shores in a slower way.

Those are just a few things that visitors to the 2019 Bike Fest at Kyte Monroe Memorial Park, 32701 Harper Ave., will be able to do during the event, to be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 11.

Registration costs $10 for the second annual Bike Fest, and includes a leisurely 10-mile bike ride through the city, heading from Kyte Monroe south to Blossom Heath Park and back. Participants will also receive lunch.

Hosted by Tim’s Bike Shop, the event is a fundraiser for St. Clair Shores Cops for Kids, as well as a way to get more people out on bikes, said shop owner Tim Focht.

“It’s a good way to get a bunch of the people that enjoy biking to get together and ride,” he said. “So families ... can get together and ride.”

Along with the ride, there will be a BMX bike, scooter and skateboard competition at the Tiseo Skate Park at Kyte Monroe, as well as a bike raffle, a bicycle decoration station, bicycle safety checks and a bike parade for young children. St. Clair Shores Police Community Relations Officer Chad Hammer will also be on hand to give advice about staying safe while riding in St. Clair Shores.

The bike safety checks will include a check of brakes and gear shifts, as well as tire pressure.

Nearly 100 people turned out for the first festival in 2018, and Focht said he’s hoping even more will participate this year.

The Kiwanis Club of Lac Ste. Claire is also helping with the event to help promote awareness and health and bicycle safety, said Dave Rubello, a member of the club.

Last year’s event was wonderful, he said, and a great way to “get a little tour of the city.”

“That’s why I would go,” he added, “(for) healthy exercise.”

Registration forms are available at Tim’s Bike Shop, 33601 Jefferson Ave., or on the St. Clair Shores Bike Fest Facebook page.
