ROYAL OAK — At approximately 6:21 p.m. May 13, a French bulldog named Little Racks was stolen from the 100 block of Mason Court, near 11 Mile Road and Main Street.

Police said Little Racks was in the backyard when a black Dodge Caravan pulled onto the street. A man exited the vehicle and walked onto the property of the dog’s owner, Caron Williams, carried the dog back to the vehicle, and immediately left the area.

The incident was caught on a neighborhood surveillance camera.

“The case is still under investigation,” Royal Oak Police Chief Corrigan O’Donohue said. “As far as motivation and in general, I wouldn’t call (dognapping in Royal Oak) a common thing, but this breed is particularly valuable. I would suspect someone was aware they had this dog and targeted the home.”

Williams said he purchased the approximately 30-pound French bulldog as a puppy in November for $13,000.

“It’s a shock,” Williams said. “I think it’s just like a crime of opportunity.”

He said the incident is very sad, that Little Racks is like his son, and his 5-year-old daughter especially misses the family pet.

“(Going out in the yard) is his daily routine,” Williams said. “I just happened to leave him for a few moments.”

The dognapper seen on video getting out of the black Dodge Caravan is described as a white man wearing a brown baseball hat, blue sweatshirt and brown pants. Anyone with information regarding the crime should call the Royal Oak Police Department at (248) 246-3500.
