BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP — An elderly woman was reportedly fatally attacked by two dogs inside her home in Bloomfield Township.

Bloomfield Township police and fire personnel were dispatched to a home in the 2000 block of Berry Drive at approximately 6:30 p.m. Sept. 2 following reports of a dog attack.

“The daughter returned home and found her 91-year-old mother severely injured from a dog attack,” said Bloomfield Township Police Chief James Gallagher.

When officers and paramedics arrived, they found a 91-year-old woman unresponsive after being seriously injured by two Rottweilers, who also lived at the house.

“We don’t have a concrete (picture) of what happened because the elderly woman was home alone with the dogs,” Gallagher said.

Bloomfield Township emergency medical services transported the woman to St. Joseph-Mercy Hospital in Pontiac.

“Shortly after arriving there, she succumbed to her injuries, which were significant, obviously life-threatening injuries,” Gallagher said. “It is a pure tragedy.”

The responsible Rottweilers were immediately impounded by police and held at the Bloomfield Township Animal Shelter.

“We impounded two dogs, but we don’t know if both were involved in the attack. That we won’t know. We wish we knew,” Gallagher said.

The two dogs were later euthanized, with the permission of the owner. The case is currently under investigation.
